High Intensity Frequency Ultrasound (HIFU)
What is High Intensity Frequency Ultrasound (HIFU)?
High Intensity Frequency Ultrasound or otherwise known as HIFU is a non-invasive treatment that is used to combat the signs of aging. HIFU utilizes ultrasound energy in order to stimulate collagen growth, making skin become tighter and firmer. HIFU is able to target the lower layers of the skin without damaging the skin’s surface. This will reduce the signs of aging while helping your skin to boost elastin and collagen production.
How does HIFU work?
HIFU is a HSA-approved technology which is widely used across a variety of medical treatments. The mechanism of action is that high intensity ultrasound waves are focused deep into the layers of the skin, in accordance to the machine’s settings (usually at 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5nm). This allows the doctor to deliver ultrasound energy deep into the Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System (SMAS) layer.
The tightening effect from HIFU can be instantaneous. There is also the added benefit of triggering the production of new collagen towards the upper layers of the skin, which will continue even after the treatment has concluded.
What are some of the areas that HIFU can treat?
- Double chin
- Aged, dull or sagging skin
- Hooded eyelids
- Nasolabial folds
- Fine lines
- Frown or laugh lines
Am I a good candidate for HIFU treatment?
Many patients who are dealing with the signs of aging are unwilling to go for surgical options like a full facelift. Hence, HIFU is great for those patients who have wrinkles, fine lines or saggy skin.
It is important to undergo a proper consultation and communicate your treatment history to your doctor beforehand. If you have had dermal fillers or other form of implants done before, you may not be a suitable candidate for HIFU treatment.
What is the process of getting HIFU treatment like?
HIFU does not require any form of incisions or surgery. A numbing cream will be applied before the procedure is conducted. You may feel a slight prickling sensation during the treatment but this is well tolerated by most.
Some patients will report a slight discoloration of the skin around the target areas, but this is temporary and will fade away quickly.
The entire procedure takes around an hour or less to complete, but this is highly dependent on which part of the body is being treated and how severe the patient’s condition is.
Are there any side effects of HIFU treatment? What is the downtime like?
HIFU is a very safe technology and has been used for many years without any reports of adverse side effects within the medical community. There are no side effects to be expected when undergoing a HIFU treatment.
There is little to no downtime associated with HIFU. Patients are free to resume their regular activities immediately after the treatment is over.
What results can I expect from a HIFU treatment?
Results of a HIFU treatment can be instantaneous. There will be a visible lift and toning of the skin immediately after the procedure. However, the best results from a HIFU treatment are only visible 2-3 months after the treatment concludes. This is because the collagen that is stimulated by the treatment will require time to build up underneath the skin.
Frequently Asked Questions
let us clear your doubts!
The effects of a HIFU treatment can last for about 12 to 18 months. Patients are expected to maintain their skin with the use of topical creams and products in order to maintain the results of their HIFU treatment.
This can vary greatly from patient to patient, as patients who have different skin types will respond differently to HIFU treatments. Depending on your skin’s condition, patients may need up to 3 or 4 treatments of HIFU on the affected areas in order to see good results.
HIFU penetrates the layers of the skin and does not damage the skin’s surface. It is meant to help to lift and tone the skin from deep within. Lasers, on the other hand, target certain skin conditions that are found on the surface of the skin such as warts, moles, pigmentations, etc.
